After months of speculation and anticipation Xiaomi has finally launched its Mi Mix 2 smartphone. The device is every bit as gorgeous and powerful as we had expected it to be, but it has turned out that it also contains some serious limitations that we didn’t know till now.
Here we’ll try to take a look on all those pros and cons of this flagship smartphone to help you determine whether you should go for it or not. Let’s begin:
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Pros and Cons
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Specs
Before we begin going deep into pros and cons of this smartphone, let’s take a quick look on its specs. Mi Mix 2 comes with a 6-inch large LCD display having resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 pixels, Snapdragon 835 processor, 12mp primary camera, 5mp secondary camera and 3,400 mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support. The device will be available in 3 different versions:
- A 4GB RAM version with internal storage of 64GB
- A 6GB RAM version with storage of 128GB
- And finally, an 8GB RAM version with internal storage of 256GB.
Now let’s explore these specs and advantages associated with them in detail.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Pros
The pros of this smartphone are as follows:
#1. Great Design and Awesome Display
Mi Mix 2 is as stunning as we had seen in all the leaks till now. It follows a tri bezel-less design approach, completely eliminating the bezels on right, left and top edges. There’s only one bezel on the bottom, and that too a very narrow one. The front camera, notification LED and all circuitry required to power that display is included in that narrow bezel only.
Coming to the back of device you’ll see a ceramic body that looks and feels premium fitted inside a metal frame on the sides of smartphone. There’s also a ceramic unibody Special Edition version of device which takes 7 days to be built, and according to company is first ceramic unibody design for a smartphone. So overall Xiaomi has not left any stone unturned to make this device look good in our hands.
But there’s still a lot more to the design of Mi Mix 2. This time it’s much more manageable than its predecessor. By including a relatively smaller 6-inch display in this device Xiaomi has managed to make a smartphone that’s manageable despite having a large enough display. By comparison, original Mix smartphone was too big for the hand with its 6.44-inch display.
Coming to the display, it’s an LCD panel with resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 pixels. As you can imagine, it’s a stunning, high resolution display that looks and feels good to the eye. Overall, it’s a smartphone worth looking at from every angle.
#2. A Performance Powerhouse
Design and display are obviously not the only plus points of Mi Mix 2. It’s also a performance powerhouse with Snapdragon 835 processor and RAM choices of 4GB, 6GB and 8GB. When coupled with Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system it’s a combination that can give you the power you need even for most resource hungry games in the Play Store. In a nutshell, performance is not an issue at all for this smartphone.
#3. Juicy Battery With QuickCharge Support
Powerful hardware also requires powerful battery, so Xiaomi has loaded a 3,400 mAh one in this smartphone. Yes, it’s not as large as the one included in some other Xiaomi smartphones (Redmi 4 comes with a 4,100 mAh battery) but it’s powerful enough to keep the device working for an entire day.
#4. Aggressive Pricing
Finally, the best part is that Mi Mix 2 comes at a price that’s typically Xiaomi. The pricing of this device is highly aggressive, as you can see below:
- 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage version is priced at $500;
- 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage version priced at $550;
- And 8GB RAM version with 256GB internal storage costs $600.
Who wouldn’t want such a powerful smartphone at such jaw-dropping prices? But wait, there’re some shortcomings too which you should take into consideration before taking a purchase decision.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Cons
The limitations of Mi Mix 2 are as follows:
#1. No Dual Camera
In this era of dual camera smartphones Xiaomi decided to launch this device with a single lens shooter on its back. The reason of this weird choice is unclear, but the bottom line is that company has done a big mistake by not including the dual-lens primary camera in Mi Mix 2.
#2. No Wireless Charging Support
Lack of wireless charging support is another shortcoming of Mi Mix 2. And while it’s not as big of a shortcoming as lack of dual-lens camera, it’d have been great if Xiaomi would’ve paid some attention to it and included it in this flagship smartphone.
#3. No Headphone Jack
The headphone jack is also missing from Mi Mix 2, so the wide range of headphones available in the market and the ones lying in your home won’t work with it.
Xiaomi is following the path of jack-less smartphones pursued by Apple, LeEco and some other manufacturers, but that’s a frustrating thing and most smartphone users are not able to digest it till now. It’d have been great if Mi would’ve understood that frustration and included a headphone jack in this otherwise good smartphone.
#4. Non-Removable Battery
In an effort to make Mi Mix 2 as bezel-less as possible it was necessary to fit the battery inside while making it. So if you want to change the battery of this device at any point in future, you won’t be able to do that without visiting the Mi service center.
#5. Non-Expandable Memory
Finally, there’s no memory card slot in Mix 2. Again, for the sake of a large, bezel-less display. While this may not be too much of a shortcoming for 128GB and 256GB versions of this smartphone, the buyers of 64GB version may find themselves feeling the need of an external memory card slot.
It’d have been great if somehow an expandable memory slot would’ve been included in 64GB Mix 2 at least.
Conclusion
In the end we can say that Mi Mix 2 is a smartphone with stunning design and powerful specs but with some serious shortcomings.
The chief of those shortcomings is lack of a dual camera setup, while the biggest advantage is its price when compared against the specs and looks. Lack of headphone jack is also an annoying thing for many of us. So take your purchase decision wisely and go for it only if you feel that none of the shortcomings are major ones for you.
