Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun Confirms Mi MIX 2 Launch in Second Half of 2017

When Xiaomi Mi MIX was launched last year the tech industry was stunned with its screen-to-body ratio. It was essentially bezel-less before entire industry started going crazy behind this trend, and arguably also a source of inspiration for others to take all-screen design approach seriously. Though it was launched only in China, it earned serious praise and press coverage worldwide due to its bold design approach.

Now one year has passed since then, and rumor mill has been working quite hard to get as much info as possible about its successor. But this time it seems that Lei Jun (the CEO of company) was in a hurry… so he has confirmed the device launch himself. That’s right – in a Weibo post he said that Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 may be coming soon (in second half of year).

A few months ago Jun had also confirmed that Xiaomi is collaborating with Philippe Stark, a well known product designer for development of Mi MIX successor. Stark had also worked with company last year on original MIX smartphone, so he was the obvious choice for designing this successor.

When it comes to specs, Mi MIX 2 is expected to be a super-cool device like its predecessor. While the original one came with a screen-to-body ratio of 91.3%, MIX 2 will take the game to next level with ratio of 93%. Xiaomi has reportedly also focused a lot on audio quality of this phone. It’s rumored that company partnered with AAC Technologies to deliver a device that pumps out superior quality sound through earphones, and it recently also joined hands with Via Licensing to utilize the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) patents of company.

Besides this impressive stuff it’s expected that Mi MIX 2 will come with a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6.4-inch AMOLED display with resolution of 2,500 x 1,440 pixels and 3 different versions as follows:

  • A 4GB RAM version with 128GB of storage
  • A 6GB RAM version with 128GB storage
  • And an 8GB RAM version with whooping 256GB of internal storage!

The device is rumored to sport a 19mp primary and 16mp secondary camera, and there may be dual-camera setup on its back. The operating system is also rumored to be latest Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. A fingerprint sensor embedded in the display may also be present.

As far as launch time is concerned, original MIX smartphone was launched in November last year. Sine Jun in his Weibo message has said that the device will be launched sometime in second half of this year, we can safely assume that it’ll happen around the same time.
