Since its release Thursday night, the Rockstar Games compilation has not stopped making the headlines. Unfortunately, the latter does not speak well with very virulent feedback from the players. It must be said that the Rockstar collection has just experienced a chaotic first weekend and no one seems to know when it will all work out.
Why such a fiasco? How did we get here ?
The complicated launch
The launch of GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition was also a disaster. The global release was set for November 11, 2021 at 10 a.m. KST. Or 4 p.m. in France, November 12 from 2 a.m. for Australia and 4 a.m. for New Zealand.
Unfortunately, due to a concern on the side of PlayStation, the PS4 and PS5 versions of the games were all available on November 11 from midnight. Thus, from November 10 at noon, players in New Zealand began to stream the game. Many leaks arrived on the web and spread throughout the day.
PlayStation was forced to remove the trilogy from its Store to discontinue pre-orders to prevent more and more players from launching the game ahead of time. GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition went back on sale a few minutes after its “real” launch on November 11 at 4pm. For PC, Xbox and Switch gamers, they had to wait for the official date and time to be able to launch their game.
Games of very uneven quality
Thursday evening, Presse-citron offered you un test des versions PS5 et Xbox Series X de GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition. At that point, and after spending between 10am and 3pm on the title, we came to a rather optimistic conclusion with a score of 7.5 / 10 for these two versions. As we were able to clarify in our test, we were unable to play on PS4, Xbox One and Switch.
To this day, we still haven’t received a code from Rockstar for a copy on Switch and it’s starting to understand why. If the PC, PS5 and Series X versions aren’t perfect, they hold up pretty well and provide a good time to dive into nostalgia. This is obviously not the case with other versions of the game.
According to the feedback on social networks, the PS4 and Xbox One versions are nowhere near as stable as on the PS5 and Series X with quite a few bugs, display issues and drops in framerates. It would be the same on Switch with the added bonus of many crashes that do not allow players to continue their progress.
From our side, we are still waiting to be able to access a Switch version to offer you a test in the coming days.
Unfortunately, the worst was yet to come. Thursday evening, while GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition was available for only a few hours, Rockstar decides to deploy a maintenance of its Launcher. Thus, all PC players no longer had access to their games, whether GTA V, Red Dead Redemption II or GTA The Trilogy.
Services for the Rockstar Games Launcher and supported titles are temporarily offline for maintenance. Services will return as soon as maintenance is completed.

Rockstar Games Launcher services and supported titles are temporarily offline for maintenance. Services will return as soon as maintenance is complete.
For more than 15h, the service will be in maintenance with no explanation from the studio. Rockstar will post a tweet on November 13th to announce the return of the Launcher while specifying that GTA The Trilogy will still not be available. The latter was completely removed from the service. Rockstar had therefore just deleted a game that PC players had just bought, without even giving an explanation and without offering a refund.

Tonight, the trilogy was finally back for PC gamers who got to enjoy their game three days after other gamers. Here again, Rockstar remains unclear on the problems related to this maintenance.

Why a withdrawal of PC versions for three days?
If Rockstar has removed the PC version of GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition, it’s not for technical issues or bugs. Like the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, the compilation on PC offers a fairly decent rendering. On the other hand, it was the data in the game files that was causing concern.
At first, Grove Street Games (the developers of GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition) did not bother to remove the old music from GTA Vice City and San Andreas. The concern is that Rockstar no longer owns the rights to these musical tracks. Thus, thousands of PC players could access it very easily by a simple script in the lines of codes.
Second, the developers at Grove Street Games did not protect access to an uncompiled version of the game’s main script (main.scm). Thus, it was possible to easily access confidential notes from the original development teams (at Rockstar in the early 2000s).
Third problem, the developers did not encrypt the Unreal Engine 4 resources. All the game files could therefore be recovered very easily to be modified and to propose mods and other game improvements.
Rockstar Games was therefore obliged to remove the PC versions to correct these important problems in order to protect certain data and avoid being illegal for the use of music without having the rights.
GTA The Trilogy The Definitive Edition : et maintenant ?
Now, Rockstar will have to explain and apologize to his community for the chaotic launch of this trilogy and especially the lack of communication for three days. The goal is also to correct bugs and concerns on the PS4, Xbox One and Switch versions by offering stability updates as soon as possible.
We hope in any case that this incident will remain an exception in the history of Rockstar Games and that the studio will recover quickly. GTA V is due to return to PS5 and Xbox Series X in March 2022 and for the moment, players are not very optimistic about this return with once again a hazardous communication from the star firm.
