The Lord of the Rings series: release date, plot, characters, everything we know

The Lord of the Rings is coming back to the screens soon and this time in the format of a television series. It is hoped that it will succeed in developing in a sufficiently catchy way unexplored grounds of the work of JRR Tolkien. Release date, story, characters, everything we know at the moment.

Lord rings series

In November 2017, Amazon created a surprise by announcing that it had acquired the rights for the adaptation of Lord of the Rings in a television series, about 15 years after the Return of the king, the last film in the original trilogy. The latter is still in progress in May 2021.

And to get there, the firm did not hesitate to put the means. Indeed, Amazon has put nearly a billion dollars on the table to develop the series. A colossal budget which will break all records and which will make it the most expensive series of all time. As to whether it will replace Game of Thrones in terms of quality, we’ll see that. In any case, even the actress playing Galadriel young had judged the series to be extremely ambitious. We take stock.

The Lord of the Rings series: release date, number of seasons

Amazon is committed to producing at least five seasons for the Lord of the Rings TV series. If all goes as planned, the release date of the first season should be in 2021, 2022 at the latest. This range was confirmed by Jennifer Saike, the boss of Amazon Studio in an interview with Intertainment Weekly. According to her, the new Lord of the Rings series may not land until mid-2021.

Who is developing the series?

Sharon Tal Yguado, head of drama series at Amazon Studios, said the series will be the result of a collaborative effort with the Tolkien Estate, which manages all rights in connection with JRR Tolkien’s works. on the one hand, but also with the publisher HarperCollins and the company New Line (a subsidiary of Time Warner), producer of the original trilogy.

It was the most complicated deal I have ever seen, but it was handled fairly quickly, in a way that was able to create a real relationship between the two parties. It was hard, but everyone appreciated each other and a team spirit was formed when the contract was signed. (..) Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas for adapting previously unexplored stories based on the original writings of JRR Tolkien for the screen.

This was stated in November 2017 by Matt Galsor, a representative of the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins, when announcing the agreement between the various parties. As for the participation of Peter Jackson, the director of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hollywood Reporter published in April 2018 that he was in negotiations to join the production team of the new series. Good news for fans who can expect a positive impact from people who have good knowledge and experience related to the franchise.

Lord of the Rings series: what’s the plot?

In January 2021, a first synopsis of the series was released by site. The series is heralded as a prequel that will bring to the screen the heroic legends of the Second Age of the history of Middle-earth. This epic drama takes place thousands of years before the events from Bilbo and the Hobbit, and you Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien.

Thus, and according to various specialized sites, the new series The Lord of the Rings will not be a direct adaptation of Tolkien’s three books: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The king’s return. A detail confirmed by Matt Galsor, the representative of the rights holders of the Tolkien family, when he claimed that the Amazon project would bring to the screen unexplored stories of the original writings of JRR Tolkien, including those on The Hobbits. Amazon has set its sights on JD Payne and Patrick McKay to write the adaptation. Note that the two men are also in charge of the Star Trek 4 project on the scenario aspect.

Casting: which actors announced for the series?

In January 2020 were announced fifteen actors for the series: Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Max Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh (Tyra), Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith and Charlie Vickers.

A year later, on December 7, 2020, more than 20 actors were added to the cast, with: Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Maxim Baldry, Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman, Anthony Crum, Maxine Cunliffe, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Thusitha Jayasundera, Fabian McCallum, Simon Merrells, Geoff Morrell, Peter Mullan, Lloyd Owen, Augustus Prew, Peter Tait, Alex Tarrant, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker and Sara Zwangobani.

Casting: what old characters could we find?

The choice of characters will obviously be linked to the orientation of the story. And some former actors are not very optimistic about the resumption of their role. Already, that they would be called upon would be unlikely to remain consistent with the age of the characters. Andy Serkis aka Gollum spoke in February 2018 about the new Lord of the Rings series. For him, a return of his character to the casting is unlikely.

Oh my God, I have no idea what this is about. I mean, it looks amazing, but I don’t think I’ll be there. I don’t think they would be interested. It’s something very fresh, a new take on the saga, I can’t imagine being a part of it in any way.

Same story with John Rhys-Davies, who plays the dwarf Gimli in The Lord of the Rings. He was also much more bitter in his comments.

Why do you need a The Lord of the Rings series? It puzzles me, but I am sincerely convinced that these are financial reasons without any principle. The amounts of money they make online are shameful. The poor Tolkien must turn over in his grave.

Among the optimists, we find Ian McKellen who would not shy away from the pleasure of donning Gandalf’s costume again, as he said recently in an interview with BBC Radio. Asked about the possibility that another actor might be brought in to play the role, he hinted that he would be ready to re-stack.

What do you mean another Gandalf? (…) Are you suggesting that someone else could play the part? Gandalf is over 7,000 years old, so I’m not too old.

The actor has nevertheless made it known that he has not yet been approached. It is of course a bit early. We’re still relatively far from the first season’s release date. We will regularly update this file with all the latest information. We hope that this series derived from Lord of the Rings will not damage the reputation of the franchise.
