Star Wars Jedi: Survivor promises 5 unique lightsaber fighting styles

As well as a beautiful blaster

Two weeks after the revelation of a release date pour Star Wars Jedi: SurvivorGame Informer offers us the first details on new gameplay mechanics of this direct sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order, seen in the latest trailer.

5 years after the events of Fallen Order (at the same time as the series centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi), Cal Lasted had time to practice his Jedi abilities to learn a few tricks, being able to put them to the test during the Survivor campaignas indicated Stig Asmussen, director at Respawn Entertainment.

Survivor account deepen the combat system darksoulesque already implemented in Fallen Order, but also bring new things. Cal was able to exploit unique lightsaber fighting styles, and to change them in a fluid way according to the enemies encountered. In the next game, the number is increased to 5 :

We have 5 complete styles in the game. It largely depends on the enemy you encounter. There are advantages to using certain styles against certain types of enemies, and it’s up to the player to learn how to exploit them. This forces the player to dissect enemies and figure out which is the best tool for the job.

If he will always be able to twirl a double blade or a sword in each handCal will be able to complete his combat abilities with a weapon… less civilized: a blaster. With his saber in one hand and the blaster in the otherSurvivor promises fights that will bring more dynamic engagement distance.

Nevertheless, the lightsaber remains the centerpiece of the Star Wars Jedi games. This is why Cal’s astonishing saber can also take the form of a very special weapon: that of Kylo Renwith the side laser guards. At least this type of sword that could bring back bad memories for Star Wars fans has a certain advantage: it strikes heavy attacks particularly effective on larger targets.

It’s a more reckless approach. It’s heavy; it’s tough. But you have to be very measured when using it, because the timing windows are longer with this blade.

We can imagine the meetings within Respawn on how to deepen the sword combat of Jedi: Survivor: “what types of sabers do we want in the next game? – all”. But if it could be equated to A facility which allows the maximum use of Jedi combat techniques in a single game, Asmussen adds that this contributes to the characterization of Calwho completed his training almost as an autodidact.

It really speaks to when we reunite with Cal in this part of the story. It’s been five years since the first game, and the dark times are still in full swing. He’s an unconventional Jedi and he has to do unconventional things. Would it be wrong at the height of the Jedi Order? Cal realizes he has to exploit everything he has at his disposal.

The director does not dwell too much on new gameplay opportunities provided by Survivor outside of combat, but Cal will be able to user d’un filin to facilitate the exploration of environments that should be much more open than Fallen Order levels, in addition to power train and use mounts.

This is a broader take on Metroidvania. Cal can bridge huge gaps by combining multiple skill types. But it also translates to how we approach these mounts and how they are used to explore and make the world our own.

If all goes well Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be available March 17, 2023 on PC, Xbox Series et PlayStation 5.
