First mentioned in October 2020, then started in December 2020, the purchase $ 1 billion by Sony from the anime streaming site Crunchyroll is now complete. The deal was confirmed earlier this week in a press release, with the final purchase price at $ 1.175 billion, or just over € 1 billion.

According to Crunchyroll, the platform offers more than 1,000 anime and around 80 manga, although not all programming is available worldwide due to licensing restrictions. Sony plans to “ create a unified anime subscription experience “. Thus, the Japanese firm probably wants to compete with Netflix, which has signed the arrival of 40 new animes in 2021.

Sony buys Crunchyroll anime service for PlayStation Plus

Crunchyroll now counts ” 120 million registered users in over 200 countries “. A massive clientele for the Japanese firm, especially since Sony now owns all Crunchyroll offers and services, from its anime streaming service to events to video games.

« With the addition of Crunchyroll, we have the opportunity to serve anime fans like never before and deliver a true anime experience, on their platform of choice, from cinema, events, entertainment at home, games, streaming, TV, everywhere, in every way Said Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra.

Sony had announced the acquisition of Crunchyroll from AT&T for the very first time in late 2020. At the time, the service said it was counting 3 million subscribers and over 90 million users registered in over 200 countries. Less than a year later, Crunchyroll notes that these numbers have respectively risen to 5 million and 120 million.

So what does this mean for PlayStation Plus users, rather than just shareholders? Unfortunately, Sony’s plans to include Crunchyroll are rather vague. Information such as price changes or licensing agreements are still a long way off. On the other hand, the PS Plus costs € 8.99 per month and Crunchyroll € 4.99 per month: a new subscription could thus be available around 10 euros.
