The release of Mortal Kombat is getting closer every day. But what will this reboot of films released in the 90s hold in store for us? Plot, actors, release date… We detail all of this in this special report.
Adapting a video game license to the big screen is not easy. Many filmmakers have broken their teeth in trying to create an adaptation worthy of the name. We think in particular of the films Resident Evil and Tomb Raider which struggled to convince viewers.
The case of Mortal Kombat is itself to be qualified. Directed by Paul WS Anderson, this film released in 1995 has remained faithful to the universe of the eponymous video game. If his script and his music are rather appreciated, it is rather on the side of the fighting that the shoe pinches, the latter notably sorely lacking in realism.
Its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Final Destruction, has received a very poor reception from critics and viewers. Released in 1997, it is particularly singled out for its tasteless (if not non-existent) scenario, its poor dialogue and its very limited acting. To this are also added costumes and sets failed. More than 20 years later, a reboot of Mortal Kombat is therefore about to burst. It remains to be seen whether he will succeed in restoring the image of the franchise in the cinema. Here’s everything we know about this highly anticipated 2021 film.

Mortal Kombat: when to release?
Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat burst on April 23, 2021 in theaters but also in streaming. And for good reason, all of Warner’s films will be released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max in 2021. Mortal Kombat is therefore no exception to the rule.
That being said, what about France? If the cinemas have finally reopened their doors, it is not known if the film will land in our theaters in the future. Here are the platforms where the film is offered:
- Google Play

Mortal Kombat : quelle intrigue ?
The Warner has already unveiled the synopsis of the reboot. The screenplay was written by Oren Uziel and Greg Russo. Which is notably famous for having been one of the 50 best Mortal Kombat players in the world in the past. In the film, we will follow the adventures of Cole Young who has a habit of fighting for money. The latter, however, does not understand why the Emperor of Outworld Shang Tsung sent the formidable warrior Sub-Zero to find him.
Anxious to protect his family, he then sets out in search of Sonya Blade under the command of Jax, a special forces major decked out like Cole with a birthmark forming a dragon. The latter allows him to access the temple of Lord Raiden, elder God and protector of the Earthrealm. The opportunity for him to train alongside powerful warriors like Liu Kang, Kung Lao or the mercenary Kano. As Outworld seeks to conquer Earth, the warriors of Earthrealm will do everything to keep the invaders at bay.
“But will Cole be able to unlock his arcane – the immense power of his soul – in time to save his family, but also to stop Outworld for good?” “, wonders the official synopsis. All this announces sacred fights in prospect. In this regard, know that Mortal Kombat should be very gory thanks in particular to the presence of the famous Fatalities, these final blows which allow to finish his opponent with style and brutality in the video game.
“There will be mad deaths. Brutal stuff, without the slightest restraint! We have chosen a few iconic Fatalities from the game », assured Simon McQuoid. While Mortal Kombat will be heavily influenced by video games, it won’t be a completely faithful adaptation, however.
Mortal Kombat : quel casting ?
Cole Young will be played by Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2, “Wu Assassins). He will notably give the reply to Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano) and Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raiden). Let us hope that the latter does better than Christophe Lambert whose interpretation of the divinity was at the very least doubtful at the time of the first part. We will also find in the cast Mehcad Brooks (Jackson “Jax” Bridges), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang) and Chin Han (Shang Tsung).
The iconic Sub-Zero Ice Master will be camped by Joe Taslim. Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion), Max Huang (Kung Lao), Sisi Stringer (Mileena) and Matilda Kimber (Emily Young) complete the squad. Note the absence from the cast of Johnny Cage, a character much appreciated with a devastating kick and iconic sunglasses. Note that the costumes of the characters of Mortal Kombat have already been unveiled, the official posters of the film have been shared on Twitter.
Jessica McNamee, who will play Sonya Blade, has gone through the archives to better understand her character. “I had so much to learn. I learned about Sonya’s past and the causes of her rivalry with Kano. If I had just read the script, I would never have realized how much she hates him ”, she thus recognized. Here is the rest of the cast:
- Daniel Nelson (Kabal)
- Elissa Cadwell (Nitara)
- Nathan Jones (Reiko)
- Yukiko Shinohara (Harumi Hasashi)
- Ren Miyagawa (Satoshi’Jubei’ Hasashi)
Quoted by Le Journal de Montréal, director Simon McQuoid believes that the film will appeal to license aficionados as well as neophytes. It promises a good dose of action and brutality, high-intensity combat and a myriad of “easter eggs” for early fans.. “Even if you have never experienced ‘Mortal Kombat’ games, you will be able to fully appreciate these characters. Kano is hilarious, Sub-Zero is ruthless, Jax is beautiful, Sonya is a machine and Cole serves as a guide in this crazy, incredible and massively exciting universe ”.
