As Worlds 2021 kicks off, Riot Games has announced that the League of Legends World Championship, which was originally scheduled to be held in China, will take place in Europe.
The least we can say is that the year 2020 will have been strongly affected by the global pandemic. Even today, the world of esport is strongly impacted by this crisis which disrupts the proper functioning of competitions.
Between postponement, cancellation or last minute solutions, competition organizers continue more than ever to walk on a razor’s edge. Among the multiple scenes involved, League of Legends remains one of the most impacted, and it is far from over.
While the League of Legends Worlds were supposed to make a comeback in China, due to the health context, Riot Games decided to back down.
Europe will be in the spotlight for Worlds 2021
With just weeks to go, Riot Games has announced that Worlds 2021 will not take place in China. For “Preserve the integrity of the competition” faced with the various health restrictions, it was decided that the championship would finally take place in Europe.
Due to the still very strong health restrictions due to Covid-19 and in order to preserve the integrity of the competition, the #Worlds2021 will be held in Europe instead of China. New info will be shared in the coming weeks.

Which cities will be in the spotlight for Worlds 2021?
According to an article by Dot Sport Worlds 2021 will take place entirely in Reykjavík, Iceland. The competition will take place at Laugardalshöll Indoor Sporting Arena known for hosting this year’s MSI.
Riot Games has proven to be able to organize an international event with the best possible precautions during this pandemic.
The dates from October 5 to November 6 are not expected to change.
During the announcement that the Worlds would finally be in Europe, John Needham reassured fans with information that would arrive a few weeks before the start of the tournament.
This is the second time that the Worlds did not go as planned because of the pandemic which has affected the world since 2020. The Worlds of 2021 were to take place in North America but because of the health context, Riot proposed to China to renew in order to catch up with the Worlds of 2020 which did not go as planned.
It may be that unfortunately this year, there is no audience and the event goes like the MSI with just the players on stage.
The destination of Iceland seems almost validated, Riot should in any case provide an official response shortly with hopefully the public!
