We are in 2022, in the era of digital and streaming. But the vinyl format continues to be a hit, although it is now over 70 years old. In recent years, vinyl sales have continued to increase. And in the United Kingdom, it has even become the second most popular physical medium, ahead of CDD albums, DVDs, Blu-Rays, and even behind PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 games in physical format. Only Nintendo Switch cartridges are ahead of vinyl albums.
In any case, this is indicated by data relayed by a recent publication by ERA, a British association which brings together players in music, video and video games.
“Year-to-date sales figures show that for the first time vinyl records have outpaced all physical entertainment formats except Nintendo Switch games, according to an analysis by ERA, the association digital entertainment and retailers »we read in the publication.
ERA figures show that for the first time vinyl LPs have overtaken all physical formats – bar Nintendo Switch games.

Since the beginning of the year, across the Channel, vinyls have generated nearly 81 million pounds, the equivalent of more than 93 million euros. Compared to the same period in 2021, the increase is 12.2%. With over £88 million in revenue generated, Nintendo Switch cartridges are the only medium ahead of vinyl. However, its sales are in decline, down 12.5% from the same period in 2021.
A global phenomenon
And if you think the vinyl comeback is only happening in the UK, you’re wrong. According to a Bloomberg article, in the United States, sales increased by 51% in 2021. But these are nevertheless starting to stagnate, since in the first half of 2022, the increase in sales was only 1 %, which corresponds to 19.4 million vinyls sold in six months.
In France, according to data relayed by Statista, which quotes the Syndicat National de l’Édition Phonographique, more than 5 million vinyls were sold in 2021. In 2016, we sold three times less.

The site also explains that last year, sales almost reached 79 million euros, which represents 33% of revenue from physical formats. Another interesting fact: after subscription streaming (52%) and CDs (19%), vinyl was the third source of income for the music industry in France.

Vinyl turns to bioplastic
Moreover, as vinyl still seems to have a bright future ahead of it, it is in the process of being modernized, by adopting a material that is more respectful of the environment. This year, British company Evolution announced the first bioplastic vinyl instead of PVC.
As an AFP article explains, PVC is, according to Greenpeace, the plastic most harmful to the environment. The NGO also believes that these bioplastic vinyls could “completely rid of one of the major pollutants in the music industry. »
