You have a USB flash drive or hard drive in FAT32 format and want to convert it to NTFS to skip the 4GB limit for a single file. Or, you want to switch from NTFS to FAT32 for the compatibility of this file system with the majority of operating systems. Either way, here’s how to do it without losing data.
Discs in FAT32 can not store files larger than 4 GB. If necessary, you can store them convert to NTFS to avoid this limit without carrying out a traditional formatting which will cause the loss of your data.
Convert FAT32 drive to NTFS without data loss
The process is very simple and will save you from formatting the drive if you don’t have any other space to back up first. - Enter the command convert G: /FS:NTFS. Replace the letter G with that of your medium and press Enter.
- All you have to do is wait a few minutes for the conversion to take place. As soon as it is finished, a message will let you know.
So converting FAT32 file system to NTFS without formatting is quite easy on Windows. However, there is no gateway to switch from NTFS file system to FAT32, or at least without going through third party partition software that has this functionality.
