Google has reportedly abandoned the Pixel Fold

For several months, rumors had circulated about the Pixel Fold, a folding smartphone that Google would have developed. The Mountain View firm has been interested in this type of device for years. In 2019, Google had confirmed that it was looking at a few prototypes, while specifying, at the time that a commercial product was not yet on the program.

In 2021, the company is said to have finally considered launching its first folding smartphone. And some clues left by it had suggested that the product could arrive before the end of the year.

Yet in October, when Google introduced the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, the Pixel Fold was absent. And obviously, it is because the firm would have finally changed its plans.

Finally, no Pixel Fold?

According to a recent publication Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), indicates that Google has canceled its component orders for the Pixel Fold, and decided not to put the product on the market. Why ? Because the product would not be competitive enough. Google probably would have realized that it was not worth it to compete in Europe and the US with Samsung in a niche market in which it would face high costs.

According to unofficial sources, the Pixel Fold should have used a foldable screen similar to those used by Samsung smartphones, with LTPO technology and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This model should have used the same Tensor chip as the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro.

On the other hand, with regard to the camera, Google would have planned to make some concessions. The main photo sensor on the back should have been a 12-megapixel sensor, to keep the Pixel Fold relatively thin.

But if Google canceled the Pixel Fold, does that mean it will no longer make folding smartphones?

Many media agree that the firm could enter this market, but later.

In the meantime, Samsung continues to step up. This year, sales of the Korean giant’s folding smartphones are finally taking off, thanks to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 which, in addition to improvements in durability, also cost less than previous models. In particular, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a very attractive price.

Encouraged by the sales of its folding smartphones in 2021, Samsung has also already planned an increase in production for the next generation.
