Samsung worked on its foldable displays for years before releasing the first commercial product. And when he launched his first model in 2019, he was hoping for adoption of this type of device by the general public. However, at first, the Korean giant’s folding smartphone sales were quite modest.
Nevertheless, this year, it seems that sales are finally taking off. And in one country, South Korea, the new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 even sell better than most of the company’s flagship.
As reported by the Yonhap news agency, Samsung has just announced that after 39 days of commercialization, its new generation of folding smartphones has crossed the mark of one million units sold. And this is an impressive performance.
Indeed, the only devices to have reached this sales volume in such a short time in this market are those of the Galaxy Note 10 series and the Galaxy S8 series. In other words, in Korea the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 have sold better than the Galaxy S21 series, which is yet considered to be Samsung’s flagship.
The brand also reportedly revealed that 70% of the devices sold were Galaxy Z Flip 3 (the cheapest model). And 54 of the Galaxy Z Flip 3s sold were sold to millennials and millennials.
The success of Samsung’s new folding smartphones can be attributed to several factors. First of all, when it comes to the durability of the foldable screen, Samsung has kept advancing its technologies. But on top of that, the Korean giant has also made an effort on the price. In Europe, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a starting price of 1,059 euros. It costs less than an iPhone 13 Pro.

Growth that is not limited to South Korea
While the official figures provided by Samsung relate to its home market, the growth in sales of folding smartphones is a global phenomenon.
“With the significant drop in prices and the simultaneous improvement in durability, Samsung overcame two of the biggest barriers to foldables adoption, which previously were the very high price and fragility of previous devices. The market is reacting very positively to the relaunch due to these two factors, and therefore we expect the adoption of foldables to accelerate rapidly in the second half of 2021 ”, explains Nabila Popal, analyst at IDC, quoted by the Android Central site.
And this second half of 2021, sales could be multiplied by three or by four compared to the previous year.
