For years, the European brand Fairphone has stood out from other manufacturers of Android devices thanks to its green and ethical approach. Indeed, for the manufacture of its smartphones, Fairphone greatly reduces its impact on the environment.
And in order to encourage people to keep their devices for as long as possible, Fairphone designs their smartphones to be easy to repair. The modular design of the devices of this brand means that if something goes wrong, the user will be encouraged to replace the faulty module instead of buying a new smartphone.
Fairphone wants to support its smartphones as long as possible
In addition, with regard to the software, Fairphone also wants to be exemplary, by providing updates for the users as long as possible. And this week, the brand is teaching all Android smartphone manufacturers a lesson by updating a model released six years ago, in 2015!
Our 6-yr-old Fairphone 2 is being upgraded to Android 10. That’s 7 years of software support! An industry first for an Android device! 🙌 Together with the open source community we built the operating system. Proving it is possible to put sustainability at the heart of tech. 🌿 pic.twitter.com/TuUjJWTi5J

The news was announced by the brand on Twitter. “Our 6 year old Fairphone 2 is being upgraded to Android 10. It’s been 7 years of software support! An industry first for an Android device! Together with the open source community, we built the operating system. Prove that it is possible to put sustainability at the heart of technology ”, can we read in the publication.
In 2021, a device released in 2015 still receives updates: this should inspire other smartphone brands
Of course, Android 10 is a version of the OS released two years ago. But the fact that a device released in 2015 continues to be supported (and therefore continues to be usable) and receive updates is exceptional.
By the way, with this announcement, Fairphone is teaching all manufacturers of Android devices, even Google, a lesson. Indeed, today, if you own a Pixel 3, a model that came out at the end of 2018, you must already be thinking about buying a new smartphone. Indeed, this model will receive its very last update in the first quarter of 2021.
But the good news is that recently Google made an effort to extend the support duration of its smartphones. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, released this past quarter of 2021, will continue to receive security updates until 2026.
