Back to school 2022: there are still plenty of unoccupied places in pharmacy studies!

Nearly a third of the places would still be vacant in the second year of pharmacy studies, according to the first post-return figures.

Red alert for future pharmacists. Indeed, according to a study conducted by Anepf, around 1100 places would be free in the second year of pharmacy. And this, just a few weeks before the start of the school year. MCE TV explains everything from A to Z!

Back to school: sectors fuller than others

This start of the 2022 academic year has reinforced the inequalities that may exist between the different studies. Some sectors are so successful thatthey are running out of space while others are struggling to fill the seats in the amphitheaters.

Thus, if many students have struggled to get a place in a master’s degree for this fall, this is not the case for doctoral students. Indeed, the number of students who push their studies beyond the Bac + 5 is restricted from year to year.

“In twelve years, France has lost 10,000 doctoral students, or nearly 13%”then underlined a study by Fage published on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

And this is due to the aids that students do not always touch and, of course, to the difficulty of studying. In short, the sector is far from attractive.

Conversely, in high schools, students see each other forced to repeat due to a lack of places in higher education courses. The distribution of studies is therefore more than unequal in France.

Finally, if there is one sector that is suffering from this lack of students, it’s good to study pharmacy. More than a third of their places remained vacant this start of the 2022 school year, according to a study by Anepf. MCE TV tells you more!

Fewer and fewer pharmacy students

On the benches of the twenty-four universities of pharmacy in France, many students are missing at the start of the second year. A situation that worries teachersespecially in view of the growing number of students.

And for good reason, approximately 1100 places are still vacant at the end of September. This equates to a 550% increase over last year.

This finding therefore shows “the uneven application of the reform of entry into health studies”. This is, at least, what the Anepf affirms with the support of the National Council of the Order of Pharmacists and the main union federations.

That said, this lack of students is not due to chance. “Overloaded programs and the absence of local monitoring committees are among other things responsible for this fall”explains the signatories of the press release.

Finally, professionals in this profession also denounce “a great lack of attractiveness” for the sector. And this, in addition to an insufficient presentation of opportunities from the start of the school year.

It is therefore very worrying when we know that this trade is already suffering from a lack of manpower. We can therefore envisage a shortage of pharmacists for in a few years if nothing changes.

It remains to be seen if any decisions will be made on this subject. on the side of the State before the next school year. It is therefore a case to follow closely!
