According to the trade press, Apple is currently working on the predecessors of the AirPods Pro, the AirPods Pro 2. While everyone thought they would be released at the same time as the iPhone 13, the future high-end wireless headphones from Apple are still waiting … Release date, price, technical sheet … ‘wait ?
Thanks to their intrinsic qualities, AirPods Pro are among the best wireless headphones around. With them, the Cupertino company has demonstrated that it has a perfect command of the subject of premium bluetooth headphones : listening comfort, compact and sleek design, convincing audio quality or even effective active noise reduction are some of their best assets.
The most music-loving Apple fans are getting impatient now: where is it? the second generation of AirPods Pro ? Everyone expected the AirPods Pro 2 to be released at the same time as the iPhone 13, the first generation having been released two years ago already, in October 2019. As you know, it was not, since Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 7 and a new iPad mini 6 instead.
Thus, the AirPods Pro 2 are long overdue. Considering the time, they will most likely join the AirPods 3 by the end of the year, or by the end of 2022 and will hopefully complete the range of headphones on offer. by Apple with good arguments. If nothing official has been shared about them yet, we can already begin to imagine them. So what to expect What will be their share of novelties? We tell you all about them.
AirPods Pro 2: when to release?
Everyone was expecting the AirPods Pro 2 to make their debut this year (along with the iPhone 13) but it looks like the new wireless earbuds won’t finally arrive until 2022. That’s, du less, says Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. Nothing official has been revealed about this yet and we will update this file as soon as possible.
AirPods Pro 2: what price?
In France, AirPods Pro cost € 279, which at the time of their launch made them some of the most expensive wireless headphones in their class.
In total, in 2021 and according to Counterpoint, no less than 72.8 million AirPods Pro have passed around the world. Apple is said to have planned to sell 80 to 90 million over the same period (2019 to 2021). Given these excellent sales figures, we don’t see why Apple would lower the prices for this second generation. Especially since there are even more expensive alternatives, like the Master & Dynamic MW08 or the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 – 349 € and 400 € respectively – and the shortage of chips is raging.
Apple could well increase its price by 20 or 50 € to justify the possible novelties, but overall, the latest rumors suggest a price similar to the first generation headphones, ie 279 €.
AirPods Pro 2 : quel design ?
The most music-loving Apple fans are getting impatient: where has the second generation of AirPods Pro gone?, the AirPods Pro 2 will not radically change their design vis-à-vis the first generation. According to Bloomberg, Apple could make them even more compact, by eliminating the famous “stems”. Apple would test a more rounded shape as well, which would mean that the AirPods 2 could look more like something like the Google Pixel Buds or the Samsung Galaxy Buds.
According to leaker Mr. White, AirPods Pro 2 could also be available in two different sizes. But there is no reason to believe that this will indeed be the case. Only the future will tell us.
AirPods Pro 2: which technical sheet?
A digital crown?
It is “the” popular control function of the Apple Watch which has also found its place on the AirPods Max. Used for precise volume control or for activating Siri, it could well find its place on the AirPods Pro 2.
Improved physical activity tracking
If the latest rumors are to be believed, the AirPods Pro 2 will enjoy a much better physical activity monitoring, with improved sensors and advanced tracking features. The exact nature of these characteristics remains a mystery, although they may be similar to the Soul Blades or the Amazon Echo Buds 2, which can track steps, distance, duration, calories and pace in “Workout” mode.
A “sensor fusion” system with the iPhone and Apple Watch?
The AirPods Pro 2 could also benefit from new sensors, positioned on the ears, which would allow to monitor different constants. For example, it would be possible to do ECGs on demand. Since the current AirPods Pro already include accelerometers and gyroscopes, the AirPods Pro 2 might even work together with the iPhone and Apple Watch, with a “sensor fusion” system, a term used by Apple.
H1 chip and dynamic 40mm transducer?
The AirPods Pro 2 may well take advantage of the 40mm in-house dynamic transducer which equips the AirPods Max today. But Apple could also unveil a new personalized acoustic design, with great reinforcement of the H1 chip, which should power them. A chip that would allow improved audio latency, better battery management (50% more talk time), etc.
Biometric and ambient light sensors
A report from DigiTimes indicates that biometric sensors could be used on the AirPods Pro 2. Combined with other components, this would open the door to many new health-based features : a step counter, motion detection or heart rate monitoring, etc.
A tweet from LeaksApplePro also corroborates this report, with the idea that Apple may well add ambient light sensors, similar to Samsung’s Gear IconX earbuds. Patently Apple finally mentions a patent filed by Apple, which presents a new system that would allow the headphones to be controlled with simple movements of the hand …
A screen on the case
The Tech Blood site created a render of the AirPods Pro 2 with a Retina HD display just in front of the charging case (see image on top). The case can thus be used as a compass, to control reading and to lock your AirPods on an iPhone. The screen would also be able to show battery levels, incoming calls, and the time. A great idea.
We can also expect the support of l’audio spatial, a quick pairing feature between several devices, as well as the presence of modes Active noise reduction and Transparency.
That’s all, for now, what we know about the AirPods Pro 2. We will of course update this file whenever we hear about a novelty, a rumor or information. About them.
